    Hi everyone,

I’m struggling with my 3-year-old who has intense tantrums whenever we’re in public, especially in grocery stores.

If I say no to buying something, he screams, throws himself on the floor, and refuses to move. It’s embarrassing and stressful, and I often feel judged by other people around us.

I’ve tried staying calm and explaining things, but in the moment it feels impossible.

What strategies have actually worked for you when dealing with public tantrums?

Do you leave the store immediately? Ignore the behavior? Prepare them ahead of time?

I’d really appreciate hearing what has worked in real life.

We went through this exact phase around age 3.

What helped us most was setting expectations before going into the store. I’d say something like, “We’re buying groceries only, not toys today.” It didn’t stop every meltdown, but it reduced surprises.

If a tantrum started, I stayed calm and kept my voice low. Sometimes I’d move to a quieter corner until it passed. I realized reacting strongly made it worse.

It’s exhausting, but it really is a phase. Consistency helped more than anything.
